Our Curation & Evaluation Methodology
At Komodo Holiday Package, the trust you place in us is our most valuable asset. To earn and maintain that trust, we employ a comprehensive and transparent methodology for selecting, evaluating, and monitoring every partner, vessel, and guide in our network. This is not a one-time check; it is a continuous process of verification and quality control. This page details the rigorous criteria we use to ensure that every Komodo holiday package we offer meets our exacting standards of safety, quality, and sustainability.
The Four Pillars of Our Evaluation
Our methodology is built on four core pillars. Every potential partner and service is scored against these criteria. Only those who achieve a consistently high score across all four pillars are invited to join our curated portfolio.
1. Safety & Compliance (40% of Score)
This is our non-negotiable foundation. We conduct thorough audits to verify adherence to both Indonesian maritime law and international best practices.
- Vessel Certification: Verification of valid Surat Ukur (Tonnage Certificate), Pas Besar (Vessel Registration), and annual inspection certificates from the Kantor Syahbandar dan Otoritas Pelabuhan (KSOP) Labuan Bajo.
- Safety Equipment: On-site inspection of life rafts, life jackets, fire suppression systems, GPS, satellite phone, VHF radio, and first aid kits (including emergency oxygen). We verify that equipment meets SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) standards where applicable.
- Crew Competency: We verify captain and crew certifications (e.g., Ahli Nautika Tingkat, Basic Safety Training), first aid training, and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (social security and insurance) enrollment.
- Emergency Protocols: Review of documented emergency action plans for fire, man overboard, and medical evacuation, including coordination procedures with Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency).
2. Crew & Service Quality (30% of Score)
The crew can make or break a luxury liveaboard experience. We evaluate the human element with the same rigor as the hardware.
- Professionalism & Hospitality: Assessment of crew training, language skills (English proficiency is mandatory for key staff), and overall service etiquette during unannounced spot-checks.
- Guide Expertise: Our guides must be licensed by HPI (Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia). Dive guides must hold a minimum PADI Divemaster or SSI equivalent certification with extensive local experience. We test their knowledge of marine biology, Komodo dragon behavior, and local history.
- Culinary Experience: Evaluation of the chef’s training, menu quality, food hygiene standards (HACCP principles), and ability to cater to diverse dietary requirements.
- Client Feedback Analysis: We systematically collect and analyze feedback from our own clients post-trip to monitor crew performance and service consistency.
3. Vessel Quality & Comfort (20% of Score)
We focus on providing a comfortable and well-maintained environment for our guests.
- Annual Site Visits: A senior member of our team, often our founder, personally inspects each vessel at least once a year. This includes cabins, common areas, dive decks, and engine rooms.
- Cleanliness & Maintenance: We assess the overall state of repair, cleanliness of all areas (especially galleys and bathrooms), and the quality of linens and amenities.
- Amenities & Features: Evaluation of features like air conditioning, water makers, en-suite bathrooms, and the quality of dive and snorkeling equipment provided.
- Authenticity & Design: For our traditional Phinisi yachts, we also consider the quality of craftsmanship and the authenticity of the design.
4. Sustainability & Local Impact (10% of Score)
We believe that true luxury tourism must be sustainable. We actively seek partners who share our commitment to protecting the environment and supporting local communities.
- Environmental Policies: Verification of waste management systems (no dumping at sea), use of reef-safe sunscreens and cleaning products, and policies to minimize single-use plastics.
- Conservation Adherence: Strict adherence to all Komodo National Park regulations, including wildlife interaction protocols (e.g., maintaining safe distances from dragons, no-touch policies for marine life).
- Community Engagement: We give preference to operators who employ a high percentage of local staff from Flores and surrounding islands, source produce from local markets in Labuan Bajo, and contribute to community projects.
- Partnerships: We positively score vessels that actively support or partner with recognized conservation NGOs like the Komodo Survival Program or Manta Watch.
